THE DENTAL TRAUMA EMERGENCY KIT
Overview and potential market
From my experience both as a dentist, as well as speaking to numerous sports people and teachers as we travel
around schools and clubs in Ireland, it is apparent there is:
1. A real concern/fear regarding the management of a dental injury and
2. A real lack of knowledge regarding managing such a trauma.
This seems to be born predominantly out of fear of “not doing the right thing and facing litigation” or simply fear of
the panic and distress that accompanies such an event.
Any injury around the mouth/face often is dramatic, involves at lot of bleeding and pain. It is extremely emotive and
panic levels run high for all concerned.
There is a 20 MINUTE time window after a tooth injury occurs, in which the initial treatment/management provided
will have a massive impact on the tooth’s survival rate.
The key is to stabilise the injury and get the player seen as quickly as possible by a dentist. Knowing the initial 20
mins have been utilised effectively will be a very important feature of the kit to users.
In order to create calm amidst chaos, my natural approach was to create a kit which takes the first aider step by step
through the management of the event – avoiding them having to make as few decisions as possible, and providing
them with exactly what they need to hand; and to have them knowing they are providing the exact care that the
injured party requires (within their remit).
A simple flow chart directs the user to the scenario which has occurred. There are really only 3 main potential
outcomes of a dental trauma – the tooth is completely out; the tooth is broken/loose/out of position but still in the
socket and/or the soft tissue is injured. The only other decision to make is whether you are dealing with an adult
tooth or a baby tooth.
Dental trauma management follows the universal guidelines of the International Association of Dental
Traumatology (IADT). This means that my kit which applies these, is suitable for global marketing.
