TOURNAMENT OF MINDS TEAMS REACH STATE FINAL
Early in September, five BMGS teams contested the Regional Tournament of Minds competition. There were
two Junior School teams - The Arts and STEM - and three Senior School teams in Social Sciences, The Arts and
STEM.
In an outstanding result, ourJunior Arts Team was
awarded Tournament Honours, and both of our STEM
teams qualified for the State Final which was held in
September.
The State Final was held at the UNSW two weeks
later, and our Primary and Secondary STEM teams
spent three hours “locked” in rooms and grappling
with a previously unseen, complex STEM Challenge
about space travel, using magnetic fields instead of
fossil fuels.
Several hours later, they dramatically presented their
solutions – incorporating scientific knowledge, a 3D
physical model, computer animations and a debate –
to appreciative audiences and judges.
Our Secondary team (pictured below) of Charlie
Burgess, Amelie Hugo, Oliver Freeman, Oliver Drew,
Jack Laurie and Skye Haddock was courageous in
adapting to the unexpected absence of valued team
member, Bill Klein (due to illness), and delivered a
thorough, creative, original solution, earning high Pictured back l to r: Rohan Glinn, Finley Snedden, Charlie

praise from the judges. and Raphael Hampartzoumian.
Our Primary team (pictured above) also demonstrated magnificent teamwork, composure and creative problem-
solving to produce an impressive performance that carefully addressed all scoring criteria and was highly
entertaining.
Although our teams did not win awards this time, they represented BMGS with distinction and demonstrated
that they genuinely belonged at a State level competition.
