In May, our Year 7 students were off to
Taronga Park Zoo for our annual combined
Science and Mathematics excursion.
For Mathematics, students worked on tasks
related to content they were currently
studying, or had previously studied including
fractions, shapes and time.
Students calculated the daily dietary
requirements for a variety of animals,
including the fractions of particular
ingredients. They identified 3D objects in
habitats, and 2D patterns on animal skin.
They also made 12- and 24- hour time
calculations in relation to a Zookeeper’s
schedule.
As part of their studies in the Classification
unit of the Year 7 Science syllabus, the
students were able to have a closer look
at a wide variety of vertebrates. They
observed the animals carefully, looking for
the similarities and differences that are used
to organise our knowledge about the living
world.
In addition to gaining an appreciation of the
diversity of the animals housed at Taronga,
they considered how the role of zoos has
changed over time and the significant role
they play in protecting endangered species.
