Sonic X is a Canadian rock band that in the last year have released both an album and EP. The
recent EP release contains two songs that are featured in the horror movie “Run!” I was able to do
an interview with Joseph Cumbo from the band about how they got involved with the movie, their two
recent releases, and the history of the band.
Tim Board: How did Sonic X get started? What's the history of the band?
Joseph Cumbo: So, Sonic X was an award-winning band that toured across Canada quite extensively
way back, however, we were called LA at the time. In 1994, when the grunge movement came about
with Nirvana and all that, it basically halted everything. We were very close to signing a deal with
Universal. We also had Atlantic interested in the band, but because of the grunge movement,
everything stopped. We took a 10-year break, believe it or not. 2004, we reformed the band and
decided to call it Sonic X, and that's when Sonic X was actually born. The reason we chose the name
Sonic X is because of the 10-year gap from 1994 to 2004, when we stopped and then restarted, and
then also, we wanted to include something clever in the name that had audio included in it. We
thought ‘Sonic,’ you know, sonically sounding -- so we put Sonic in the 10 years…Sonic X. I know a
lot of people think it's named after the cartoon. It isn't. We get a lot of people commenting on that, but
that's how we came about, from the band and the name as well.
TB: Have you had any letters from the cartoon’s attorneys? Any ‘Cease and Desist’ letters?
JC: Thankfully, no. But we always have it in the back of our mind when we do something. But, if this
ever goes bad, you know, we're going to get a letter. I don't even know if the cartoon is even around
anymore. I think it's just around because it's been around for a long time, but I don't think it's an active
cartoon. I think there's like Sonic the Hedgehog or something, but I don't think there's an actual Sonic
X anymore.
TB: Who are the members of the band and what are their roles?
