Adding Members
to the Tool Army
One City at a Time
“We are your tool. Use us as a catalyst in
your process of finding out whatever it is
you need to find out, or whatever it is you
are trying to achieve,” Maynard James
Keenan told interviewer Moon Zappa in
1994. Zappa inquired about the creation
of the band.
Members of Tool previously created a
story stating the band was formed due to
a pseudo-philosophy and religious faction
called lachrymology. This religion believes
that when a person experiences sorrow,
their tears are healing in nature and can
lead to an enlightened life. Drummer,
Danny Carey, later explained that this
ideology was to be taken with a grain of
salt but was an inspiration for their name.
The physical creation of Tool started in
1989 when front man Maynard James
Keenan met guitarist Adam Jones through
a mutual friend in Los Angeles, California.
rummer Danny Carey lived above Jones
and joined the band when other drummers
no-showed for rehearsals. The original
band was completed with its fourth
member, bassist, Paul D’Amour.
