After two years of practicing and performing locally in California, the band was
approached by the record label Zoo. Tool signed with Zoo and released their first EP
Opiate in 1992. With alternative rock and grunge at its height, Tool released their first
full-length album, Undertow, in 1993. D’Amour left the band amicably in 1995 to
pursue other projects. Justin Chancellor stepped in as his replacement before
recording the album AEnima (1996).
Tool went on to release four more studio albums: Salival (2000), Lateralus (2001),
10,000 Days (2006) and Fear Inoculum (2019). The band has been awarded a
GRAMMY Best Metal Performance on three separate occasions (1998, 2002, 2020).
In 2020, they won both the Billboard Music Award Top Rock Album and iHeart Radio
Music Award for Rock Album.
