One thing distinctive about Kenny Garrett is that despite his sheer genius understanding of the music, he
can still find ways to be approachable to any listener, engaging the audience with opportunity to participate
with chants together, cued clapping, and spreading the music through the room. He accomplished this on
his closing song, “Happy People,” which featured a looping end with the whole theater on their feet, dancing
while chanting along to the music.
It was a perfect way to end a night that was inspiring in many rights: inspired by a purposeful charity, inspired
by the music, and inspired by having people coming together as a community and expressing together with
an artist who is not only a legend in jazz, but very much alive with his history yet to be written.
