Analysis
1. BASED ON YOUR FINDING AND OBSERVATIONS, WHICH PHILOSOPHIES OF EDUCATION
ARE DOMINANT IN PHILIPPINE BASIC SCHOOLS? WHY DO YOU SAY SO?
Based on my observations, there are actually three philosophies that are predominant
in schools—essentialism, progressivism and constructivism. The Philippine basic
schools are essentialists because they follow the prescribed lessons or courses
provided by CHEd and DEPEd. Henceforth, they are also progressivists. I have observed
that there is indeed a paradigm shift from teacher-centered learning to student-
centered learning, where right now, students actually experience the learnings this can
be seen with the performance tasks given to them which actually have a higher
percentage in the teachers’ grading system. Lastly, Philippine basic schools are
constructivists, gone are those days where only the teacher is speaking in the class and
the only source of information. Nowadays, it can be observed how the students are
asked about their insights about the lesson and construct their own knowledge from it.
With that, according to my experiences and observations these three are the
predominant philosophies existing in the Philippine basic schools.
2. AMONG THE MENTIONED EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHIES, WHICH ONE IS NEEDED TO BE
GIVEN MORE ATTENTION AND WHY?
Among all the Education Philosophies that we discussed; I think there is one philosophy
neglected in the Philippine Educational System—reconstructionism. For me, I think that
this one must be given more attention this is because we are living in a progressive
society and people must adapt to change. If our educational system focuses more on
how are the students will adapt to social changes then I think we could create socially
responsible citizens who are responsive and adaptive to the needs of the time with
that, we could create solutions with the unending problems faced by our country.
