( - ) Quinine

Quinine occurs as white crystalline powder .1

It is levorotary, gives quinidine (d-isomer) when warmed with KOH in amyl .2
                                                                                          alcohol.

Quinine is diacidic bases due to presence of 2N atoms), .3

They form two types of salts. .4

1- Neutral salts (Quinine sulphate), insoluble in water

                                     2-Acidic salts (Quinine bisulphate),soluble in water. .1

The alkaloids decolourizes both solution of KMnO4 and bromine water solution,
due to the presence of unsaturated vinyl group.

    ( + ) Quinidine

    dextro isomer of quinine.
