Occurrence

   • Ipecac roots and rhizomes have been used in therapy as emetic and
       expectorant; antiamaebic dysentry

The main Ipeca alkaloids:

   • Emetine, cephaeline, psychotrine,and ipecoside.

   • Emetine is a non phenolic alkaloid
   • Cephaeline and psychotrine are phenolic alkaloids.
   • Ipecoside is a gluco-alkaloids with one molecule of sugar

Properties of ipecacuanha alkaloids

Emetine

    Non-phenolic
 Insoluble in aqueous solution of fixed alkali.
    soluble in ether
Cephaeline

    Phenolic
 Soluble in aqueous solution of fixed alkali.
    Soluble in ether
   • It gives emetine upon methylation.
Psychotrine

                                                                        39
