It is (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine). It is a hormone, naturally
occurring in most animals, including humans, and some other
living organisms, including algae. Circulating levels vary in a daily
cycle, and melatonin is important in the regulation of the day hour's
variations of several biological functions.

Activity and structure activity relationship

       The lysergic- amide alkaloids are of medicinal and
toxicological importance, always the (l) forms (lysergic acid
derivatives) are physiologically active while the (d) isomers
(isolysergic acid derivatives) are inactive.

       Ergometrine is the most active, concerning the oxytocic and
