Further breakdown of acetyl-CoA

• Takes place in the matrix of mitochondria in a series
of steps known as the citric acid cycle (the Krebs
   cycle, the tricarboxylic acid cycle).

In this cycle acetyl-CoA is cleaved to give:

• 2 molecules of CO2,
• 3 molecules of (NADH +H+),
• one molecule of FADH2 and
• one molecule of GTP.
