Functions of Gluconeogenesis

• Supply of body with needed glucose

    – Glucose is the only source of energy for nervous
system, RBCs and skeletal muscles during exercise.

    – Glucose is the precursor of milk sugar (lactose) in
       mammary gland.

    – Gluconeogenesis is essential during low carbohydrate
diet or when liver glycogen is depleted (after 12-18
       hours of fasting).

• It clears the blood from waste products of other
tissues (e.g. lactate produced from muscles and RBCs)
