Selected examples of marketed transdermal patches

    1. Transderm scop® (Scopolamine)
    ▪ It contains 1.5 mg of scopolamine and is designed to deliver 1 mg

         of the drug at a constant rate to the systemic circulation over 3
         days.
    ▪ An initial priming dose of 200 mg of the drug in the adhesive
         layer of the patch saturates the skin binding sites and rapidly
         brings the plasma concentration to the required steady-state level.
   Indications
    ▪ Prophylaxis of motion sickness: Apply 1 patch behind ear
         (why???) at least 4 h and preferably 12 h before anticipated
         exposure to motion, then every 3 days.
    ▪ Prophylaxis of nausea & vomiting associated with anesthesia

                      ➢ Apply 1 patch behind ear on night before scheduled surgery, then leave on for 24
                           h after surgery

                      ➢ Caesarean section: Apply 1 patch behind ear 1 hour before surgery (to minimize
                           newborn exposure, apply no sooner); remove 24 h after surgery

   2. Nitroderm® TTS (nitroglycerin)
    Indications
    ▪ It contains a vasodilator which used to prevent or reduce the frequency of

         angina attacks (chest pain or discomfort)…chronic management why??
