Hyoscine butylbromide
Uses
It is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal spasm, hypermotility, post-
operative vomiting, spastic constipation and spasm of the urinary tract.
Pharmacology and precautions of solanaceous tropane alkaloids
• Atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine are anti-cholinergic agents.
• They Increase heart rate (by depression of the vagus nerve) so they are
contra-indicated in patients suffering from hypertension. Also not
preferably concomitantly taken with Anti-cholinergics,
sympathomimetics (ex: anti-depressents)
• Act as antispasmodic on various smooth muscles (ureter, bladder and
intestine) thus, are contra-indicated in patients with benign prostatic
hypertrophy and paralytic ileus.
• They cause mydriasis, so contra-indicated in acute glaucoma.
