ICBN set suffixes to be used for categories in plant classification.
The names below order level are standard for all plant groups. They are
placed on the stem part of genus name.
e.g. The genus Lilium is a type genus, its stem is Lili and the categories
are made as follows
Category Suffix Example
Division -phyta Magnoliophya
Class -opsida Liliopsida
Order -ales Liliales
Family -aceae Liliaceae
There are 8 non-standard exceptions which are permitted as correct
alternatives to family names adding n-aceae. e.g. Compositae, Labiatae,
Leguminosae.
Binomial System for Nomenclature
The scientific name of a plant consists of two words written in
Italics.
The first name is the generic (Genus) beginning with a capital letter
e.g. Atropa, Linum, Rhamnus. It may be abbreviated to its first
(capital) letter.
The second is the specific name (Species) beginning with a small
letter that never used by itself. Atropa belladonna A. belladonna
It is more complete to place the surname of the person who first
named the species after its specific name. Atropa belladonna L.
(For Linnaeus).
