Recently, modification in plant taxonomy divides plant kingdom into 2
subkingdoms (thallobionta & embryobionta) including 16 divisions.

Thallobionta (Thallophytes)
It consists of relatively simple small plants (thallus). It is not organized into
definite roots, stems, and leaves. All thallophytes that carry on typical
photosynthesis are called Algae. It includes 9 divisions.
Embryobionta (Embryophtes)
All embryophytes are multicellular and the majority of embryophytes grow
on land, in contrast to the mostly aquatic habitat of the algae. The
embryophytes are often called land plants. It includes 7 divisions.
