Aspirin and pregnancy 446
• Aspirin has potential risks, as it inhibits platelet function and
can contribute to maternal and fetal bleeding. Overall,
large trials demonstrate low-dose aspirin’s relative safety
and generally positive effects on reproductive outcomes.
• Low-dose aspirin in combination with low-dose heparin is
recommended for treatment of recurrent spontaneous
abortion in women with antiphospholipid antibodies
(disorder of coagulation that causes blood clots
(thrombosis) in both arteries and veins as well as
pregnancy-related complications such as miscarriage,
stillbirth, preterm delivery, or severe preeclampsia))
• Higher doses of aspirin (>150 mg/d) during pregnancy be
avoided (category D)
