Tablet Printing:
Used for identification and aesthetic purposes.
Methods:
1. Ink printing (using edible inks).
2. Embossing or debossing during compression.
Tablet Types – Detailed Classification:
A. Oral tablets for swallowing:
1. Conventional compressed tablets.
2. Multiple compressed tablets (layered tablets).
3. Coated tablets.
4. Modified release tablets (sustained, delayed).
B. Oral tablets for chewing:
• Chewable tablets: disintegrate by mastication, pleasant taste, mannitol or sorbitol
base, flavored and colored.
• Examples: Antacid tablets, Vitamin C chewable.
C. Tablets for oral cavity:
1. Buccal tablets:
o Placed between cheek and gum.
o Slow drug release by absorption through buccal mucosa.
o Avoids first-pass metabolism.
o Example: Nitroglycerin.
2. Sublingual tablets:
o Placed under the tongue for rapid absorption.
o Immediate action; bypasses liver.
o Example: Isosorbide dinitrate, Nitroglycerin.
3. Lozenges (Troches):
o Dissolve slowly in mouth, local effect.
o Contain sugar and flavoring.
o Used for sore throat.
