• Water-soluble diluents: Mannitol, Sorbitol.
• Sweeteners: Aspartame, Sucralose.
• Flavoring agents: Mint, Orange.
Special Tablets:
1. Layered tablets:
o Two or more layers of different compositions compressed sequentially.
o Used for drug incompatibility or controlled release.
2. Compression-coated tablets:
o Core and coat compressed separately.
o Used for separating incompatible drugs or for enteric/delayed release.
3. Inlay tablets:
o Core partially exposed, used for localized release in oral cavity.
4. Modified-release tablets:
o Controlled, sustained, delayed, or pulsatile release patterns.
Enteric-Coated Tablets:
Designed to resist dissolution in stomach and disintegrate in intestine.
Purposes:
1. Protect drug from gastric acid (e.g., Erythromycin).
2. Protect gastric mucosa from irritation (e.g., Aspirin).
3. Deliver drug to intestine for local effect (e.g., Mesalamine).
Materials used:
• Cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP).
• Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (HPMCP).
• Polyvinyl acetate phthalate (PVAP).
• Methacrylic acid copolymers (Eudragit L100, S100).
Evaluation of Enteric-Coated Tablets:
• No disintegration in 0.1N HCl for 2 hours.
• Complete disintegration in phosphate buffer pH 6.8 within 60 minutes.
