Tablet Packaging Requirements:
Primary Packaging:
• Direct contact with dosage form.
o Blisters (PVC, PVDC, aluminum).
o Bottles (glass, HDPE).
o Foil strips.
Secondary Packaging:
• Cartons, outer boxes, inserts for information.
Functions:
• Protection, containment, convenience, identification.
Packaging Materials:
1. Glass:
o Type I (borosilicate): for injectables and hygroscopic products.
o Type II (treated soda-lime).
o Type III (ordinary soda-lime).
o Amber color filters UV light.
2. Plastic:
o HDPE, LDPE, polypropylene, PET.
o Lightweight, resistant to breakage.
o Disadvantage: permeability to gases and moisture.
3. Metal foils: aluminum.
4. Paper and laminates: for blister backing.
Child-Resistant Packaging:
Required for hazardous medications.
Uses push-through blisters, locking caps.
Tamper-Evident Packaging:
• Shrink bands, seals, or printed wrappers to indicate opening.
