2- If powdered clove or section in hypantium is mounted in
      50% solution of caustic potash, the eugenol in the volatile
      oil react to give needle shaped crystals of potassium
      eugenate.

3-Thin layer chromatography (B.P. 2008).
   Absorbent: silica gel GF 245
   Solvent system: Toluene
   Extraction: Powdered clove 0.1 g was shaken with 2 ml
 dichloromethane
    For 15 minutes, filter and evaporate to dryness on water bath
 and
    dissolve the residue in 2 ml toluene.
  Reference: eugenol in toluene.
  Visualization: under UV lamp.
  Spray the chromatoplate with anisaldehyde for 5 to 10 min.

Tests for purity: Clove contains:
   1- No starch granules (mother clove) cereals.
   2- No irregular fibrous cells.
   3- Not more than few sclereids with thick numerously pitted
      walls and large lumen frequently filled with yellowish-
      brown amorphous content.
   4- No reticulate thickened vessels and no prisms of calcium
      oxalate (clove stalk).

Assay: Determination of volatile oil by steam distillation
