Solutions Liquid preparations

• Advantages:

➢ The easiest to manufacture (have the lowest cost of production)

➢ Relatively easy for to administer

➢ Desirable when a rapid onset of action is required as they do not

need to undergo dissolution. This would be the case for local

anesthetics (lignocaine, …), ocular diagnostics and ocular

preoperative drugs.

➢ Homogeneous and therefore display a better dose uniformity

• Limitations:
➢ Rapidly drained out of the eye
➢ Not suitable for poorly soluble or hydrolysable drugs

• Requirements: Ophthalmic solutions must be sparkling clear and
free of all particulate matter for comfort and safety.
