• Formulation concept:
➢ Their use can be categorized into: emulsions as artificial tears and
emulsions as drug carriers.
Artificial tears (most commonly):
❑ O/W emulsions were specifically designed to mimic the tear film and
provide long-lasting lubrication to the eye surface.
❑ Used as lubricants for dry eye and allergy

Drug carriers:
They are ideal vehicles to:
❑ Transport lipophilic and poorly soluble drugs (cyclosporine, …)
❑ Protect hydrolysable drugs
❑ Reduce the irritant potential of drugs
❑ Increase penetration and retention time on the ocular surface (higher
than suspensions)
