1-Whole human blood BP
1-Deterioration during storage
Red blood cells may be damaged or haemolysed by
exposure to heat,freezing ,excessive agitation ,by hypertonic
or hypotonic solutions ,incorrect environmental pH,storage
Incorrect collection procedures may cause clotting of blood.
2-Bacterial contamination
Cannot steriliyzed by heat,chemical agents,filtration.
Use of properly sterilized equipment ,meticulous technique
of collection,and storage at 4-6 ⁰ .
3-Transmission of disease from the donor
Syphilis, malaria and hepatitis can be transmitted by blood
transfusion.A serological test for syphilis is always made.
Hepatitis carriers can be identified by the presence in their
blood of hepatitis B surface antigen detected by
immunological tests. The number of symptomless donors in
the UK who carry the antigen is estimated to be about 0.1%.
4-Sensitization to blood group antigens
Before blood is used ,it is tested and labelled according to
Its blood group.compatibility test is performed,i.e. th
cells to be transfused are tested against the patient’s serum
