2) From sodium acetylides and primary alkyl halides

• Higher alkynes are synthesized by alkylation of
  acetylene or terminal alkynes.

• Removal of the acidic hydrogen of terminal alkyne
  using sodamide in liquid ammonia followed by
  reaction with primary alkyl halides ONLY.

         Chemical properties

Alkynes undergo:
1. Addition reactions, including the addition of:
a. Hydrogen halides (HX),
b. Halogens (X2),
c. Water (H2O)
2 Hydrogenation (Reduction of alkynes)
a. Catalytic hydrogenation
b. Reduction of alkynes to cis alkenes
c. Reduction of alkynes to trans alkenes
3. Oxidation of alkynes
