2.C. Reduction of alkynes to trans alkenes
Chemical reduction using sodium or lithium in
liquid ammonia results in overall anti addition of
hydrogen to form a trans alkene. (Stereospecific
trans addition)

3. Oxidation of alkynes

Oxidation of alkynes with most oxidizing agents,
including ozone (O3), nitric acid (HNO3) and
potassium permanganate (KMnO4) cleaves the
triple bond to form two carboxylic acids.
***It can also be used to differentiate between
terminal and internal alkynes.
