Antitussive has soothing effect on throat
It has cariogenic effect
Preservative at high conc (>65%).
Pharmaceutical Uses of Sucrose:
It is frequently used in conjugation with invert syrup, sorbitol and glycerin to reduce sucrose
crystallization tendency.
It should not be used for diabetic patients or patients on diet.
On other hand, polyhydric alcohols such as sorbitol, mannitol and to lesser extent glycerol
are sweeting agents that can be used for diabetic patients.
B. Invert syrup:
It is a mixture of glucose and fructose obtained by acid hydrolysis of sucrose.
It is sweetener than simple syrup as fructose is sweeter than sucrose.
Sweetening agents: II. Non-Sugar based sweeteners:
A. Sugar Alcohols (Polyols):
Examples: Sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol.
These provide sweetness with fewer calories and are suitable for patients with specific dietary
restrictions.
B. Artificial (non-nutritive) sweeteners:
Examples: Saccharin sodium, aspartame & sucralose.
They provide little to no caloric value but are significantly sweeter than sugar. Suitable for
diabetic patients & patients with specific dietary restrictions & tooth decay.
- Saccharin: its use is FDA-banned as it produced bladder tumor in rats.
- Aspartame: methyl ester of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is Low-calorie (not calorie-
free). Not heat-stable, unsuitable for baking.
It is restricted for use in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU)
- Sucralose: calorie-free. Heat-stable, suitable for cooking and baking.
