For example: cough syrups tend to be syrup-based, while cough elixirs contain both water and
alcohol to enhance solubility of certain ingredients.
In addition to drug, purified water and alcohol, elixirs compose of:
Polyol co-solvents (propylene glycol and glycerol) as additional solubility enhancers used to
reduce the alcohol concentration.
Sweetening agents: The concentration of sucrose in elixirs is less than that in syrups and
elixirs require the addition of other sweeteners.
NOTE: The high concentration of alcohol prohibits the incorporation of high concentrations
of sucrose due to its limited solubility in the elixir vehicle. To overcome this problem, use
artificial sweeteners.
Flavors and colors: Alcohol in elixir allows to use flavors and colors that may have
inappropriate solubility in water, such as essential oils as flavoring agents.
Preservatives are not required in elixirs that contain greater than ~ 12% v/v alcohol, due to
the antimicrobial properties of this co-solvent.
Due to the volatile nature of some of the components of elixirs, elixirs should be packaged in
tight containers and not stored at high temperatures.
Are all cough-elixirs suitable for diabetic patients ??!!!
