Collodions
Definition: They are liquids prepared by dissolving pyroxylin (4% w/v) (a partially nitrated
cellulose) in a mixture of ethyl ether and ethanol (3:1). Following application to the skin, the
solvents evaporate, leaving a polymeric film on the skin
They are applied to the skin by brush or other applicator and when the solvent evaporates, leave
a film of pyroxylin on the skin surface
The solution is highly volatile and flammable (should be preserved in tight container and a
temperature not exceeding 30 ℃.
To be more comfortable a flexible not rigid film is required this is done by preparation of flexible
collodion by addition of 2 % camphor and 3% castor oil to the collodion…. so the film is flexible
to be used on mobile skin areas.
