A. Aromatic water
Aqueous solutions saturated with volatile oils (Peppermint water) or other aromatic or volatile
substances (Chloroform water).
It used as a vehicle and has no pharmacological effect since it contains a small amount of the
volatile substance.
They are used as a flavored vehicle to mask the undesirable taste and odor of the drug.
Example. Chloroform water:
External as rubefacient, counter-irritant & antirheumatic
Internal as carminative, flavouring, preservative (0.25%)
Prolonged use of preparations containing chloroform may cause liver damage
(hepatotoxicity) especially in children.
Aromatic waters in general should be Stored in airtight dark container, in cool place to minimize
volatilization.
B. Spirits = essences
Alcoholic or hydroalcoholic solution of volatile oil (alcohol >60% v/v). Taken orally (needs
dilution), externally or by inhalation.
It contains greater concentration of volatile or aromatic substances than aromatic water due to
higher solubility in alcohol.
What happens when diluted with water or aqueous preparation?!
It Should be stored in tight, light resistant container and in a cool place…why?.
They can be used pharmaceutically as a flavoring agents and medicinally for the therapeutic
value of the aromatic substance.
