Hypotonic parenteral solutions
IV injection cause Haemolysis of RBC which is Irreversible & Fatal.
Thus, they are made isotonic by addition of electrolytes as sodium chloride or osmotic agents as
mannitol or glucose.
NOTE: Osmotic agents as mannitol or glucose are incompatible with drugs.
Solutions are made isotonic with isotonic saline solution (0.9% NaCl)
Components of parenteral products:
1. Container (packaging). Vials
2. Active constituent.
3. Solvent. Single dose or Multi-dose SVP (1-100 mL)
4. Additives (Excipients).
