[6] WATER PH, ACIDITY AND ALKALINITY

WATER pH
Normal drinking water pH = 7
It is determined potentiometrically, using pH-

meter.
* The determination of water acidity, alkalinity

and pH gives an indication of the degree of
the corrosivity of water.

WATER ACIDITY (pH < 7)
It is caused by dissolved carbon dioxide "free carbonic
acid", mineral acids and salts of strong acids and
weak bases.

 DETERMINATION : (Titrimetry)
(a) Total acidity : water sample is titrated ≠ st. alkali

(NaOH) using ph.ph. indicator.
(b)Mineral acids acidity : water sample is titrated ≠ st.

alkali (NaOH) using M.O. indicator.
⚫ * The acidity is calculated as ppm CaCO3.
