Wood and leaves of the camphor tree.
Most of the camphor of commerce is obtained synthetically from the
α-pinene of turpentine oil.

To distinguish natural camphor from synthetic:

Natural Camphor Synthetic Camphor

d (Dextrorotatory) dl (Racemic)

No traces of Cl- Traces of Cl-

Warming with 1% vanillin/HCI: No reaction (only yellow-color).
yellow color → blue, green → indigo
blue color (due to contamination of
the camphor with constituents of
camphor oil).

Uses:
Locally camphor is weakly antiseptic, mildly anesthetic, and rubefacient

when rubbed on the skin.
