Lesson 2: D De ed di ic ca at ti io on n o of f Bhai Lehna Ji
Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second Guru of the Sikhs was born as Lehna Ji. His
father Pheru Mal was a trader. His mother's name was Mata Mansa Devi.
He married Mata Khivi and had two sons, Dasu and Datu, and two daughters
Amro and Anokhi. His son Datu Ji will play a role in later life when he
confronted Guru Amardas Ji.
Although, Bhai Lehna was a worshipper of a Hindu goddess, meeting with
Guru Nanak changed him. He dedicated himself to the service of Guru
Nanak Dev Ji, became his Sikh and began to live in Kartarpur.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji put Bhai Lehna Ji
through a series of tests of his seva
and dedication for several years at
Kartarpur Sahib.
Once Guru Nanak was working in his
fields, he was pulling weeds. Bhai
Lehna arrived. He wanted to help
Guru Nanak. He started pulling all kinds of plants- even good ones because
he had never worked in fields. Guru Nanak smiled. When it was time to go
home, Guru Nanak had him tie the weeds in a bundle. The plants were
dripping with mud. When Bhai Lehna picked up the weeds on his head, his
clothes got muddy. They both walked towards Guru Nanak’s house.
On reaching home, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s wife, Mata Sulakhani Ji was
disappointed with Guru Nanak, “Is it proper to impose such heavy load on a
guest and soil his clothes?”
Guru Nanak smiled, “This is not mud, it is saffron. This weight is nothing, he
is going to carry the weight of the world on his head. Bhai Lehna always
believed that he was a servant and Guru Nanak was the Master and served
him with full devotion.
