Lesson 4: Baba Amardas Ji
Guru Amardas Ji’s life story teaches us one very important lesson that it is
never too late to start fresh and learn something new.
Amardas Ji was born on 5th May, 1479 in Baasarke, near Amritsar. Baba
Amardas was a very religious Hindu who spent most of his life performing
all kinds of the ritual. He was a devotee of goddess Vaishno Devi and he
visited the pilgrimage places of the goddess. However, he did not feel
happy or connected with God.
Baba Amardas was married when he was 24 years old to Bibi Mansa Devi.
The couple was blessed with two sons, Mohan and Mohri, and two daughters
Dani and Bhani. Bibi Bhani would play a role later on in Sikh history. She
would be married to the fourth Guru.
Bibi Amro was daughter of Guru Angad Dev Ji
and she was married to a nephew of Bhai
Amardas Ji. One morning, Baba Amardas Ji
heard Bibi Amro, daughter of Guru Angad Dev
Ji, singing Gurbani. The words touched his soul.
He asked her what she was singing and who had
taught her such beautiful hymns. She told him
about the Gurbani of Guru Nanak. He begged
her to take him to meet Guru Angad Dev Ji.
One look at the saintly face of Guru Angad, and Baba Amardas knew that
this was the Guru he had been looking for. The radiant face of Guru Angad
was so captivating that Baba Amardas could not take his eyes off him. He
felt peaceful and serene in the Guru's presence. And now that he had found
him, he was never going to let go. Baba Amardas began to cry, all he wanted
was the honor of serving the Guru. He pleaded with Guru Angad to accept
him as his Sikh.
