Lesson 5: Dedication of Baba Amardas Ji
Every morning before dawn, Baba Amardas Ji would go to River Beaas to
fetch water for Guru Angad Dev Ji’s bath. The river was quite far.
One such day, it rained heavily. The wind was
howling, but water had to be fetched for the
Guru. Baba Amardas Ji picked up his pitcher
and walked with great difficulty towards the
river. It was dark still. He filled the water
and put it on his head.
The streets were flooded and the water was knee deep. Heavy rain slapped
his face and in the darkness, Baba Amardas Ji lost his way. He went past a
weaver’s house. His foot hit against a peg in their yard. He fell on the
weaver’s loom. Yet he held fast on to the pitcher full of water.
The weaver woke up when he heard the crashing sound outside their house.
He asked who it was. His wife was quick to recognize Baba Amardas Ji. She
muttered, ‘Who else it could be but that homeless Amru, who has nowhere
to go?’
Baba Amardas Ji did not like what she said. He retorted, “Woman, you have
gone crazy. I have my Guru to go to.” He moved on with the pitcher of
water for the Guru’s bath.
It is believed that after this incident, the weaver’s wife actually went
crazy. Her husband came to Guru Angad Dev Ji and told the whole incident.
He asked for forgiveness. That’s how Guru Angad Dev Ji found out about
the dedication of Guru Amardas Ji.
Guru Angad Dev Ji was touched by this incident. He embraced Baba
Amardas Ji and gave him a blessing, ‘Baba Amardas is not homeless but the
