Ramdas Ji on the other hand had full faith in Guru Ji. He felt bad that he
had failed to understand the directions. He fell at Guru’s feet and
confessed that he had failed to understand his Guru’s orders. He asked for
wisdom to try once again.
Guru Amardas Ji embraced him and declared him the worthy of Guruship.
He called his sons and Sikhs and said, ‘Guru Nanak made the rule that
Guruship should go to the best person. I find Ramdas to be the most
worthy of Guruship.’ Bhai Ramdas Ji was installed the Fourth Nanak on
September 1, 1574.
Guru Ramdas Sahib laid the foundation of Chak Ramdas or Ramdaspur,
which is now Amritsar. He also started the digging of Santokhsar Sarovar
which later became Amritsar Sarovar. Baba Budha Ji worked closely with
Guru Ramdas Ji.
Guru Ramdas Ji introduced the Masand system to take care of the Manjis
or Sikhs centers in faraway places. Guru Ramdas Ji wrote 638 hymns that
are a part of Guru Granth Sahib. He nominated his youngest son Arjan
Sahib as Fifth Nanak. After this he left Amritsar and retired to Goindwal
Sahib. There he passed away on September 1, 1581. Guru Ram Das was the
Fourth Guru from 1574 to 1581.
