Lesson 7: Bhai Jetha Ji
Jetha Ji was born in Lahore, now in Pakistan in 1534. His parents were too
poor to meet even the daily needs and he had to earn for his family by
selling boiled chholay. His parents died when he was just 7 year old. His
Nani took him to her village Baasarke. Once Guru Amardas Ji came to visit
his village, Baasarke and he saw Jetha Ji and loved him instantly. He
brought him and his Nani to Goindwal Sahib. There he began to listen to
Gurbani from Guru Amardas Sahib.
Bhai Jetha Ji got married to Bibi Bhani Ji, daughter of Guru Amardas
Sahib. He now came to be called as Ramdas. They had three sons- Prithi
Chand Ji, Mahadev Ji and Arjan Dev. Bhai Arjan Dev Ji would grow up to be
the fifth Guru of the Sikhs. Ramdas Ji served Guru Amardas Ji with full
devotion. Guru Ji too loved him and respected his devotion. He became
famous for his devotion, energy and eloquence.
Guru Amardas Ji had two sons and two daughters, whose husbands lived
with him. Guru Amardas Ji wanted to identify who deserved to be the next
guru and who will be able to carry out the duties of Guru Nanak’s mission.
He put everyone through many tests. And found that his son-in-law Ramdas
Ji was the most qualified to be his successor.
One day Guru Amardas Ji came to the place where the Baoli was being
constructed. He asked his sons-in-law Sri Ram and Sri Ramdas to construct
a platform to sit on. They both started working. When the platforms were
ready, Guru Ji rejected them and ordered that new ones should be made.
Sri Ram Ji demolished his reluctantly, while Ramdas Ji demolished his
without a word. This process of rejection and reconstruction happened
several times. Finally, Sri Ram Ji lost his patience and questioned Guru Ji
judgment. He felt Guru Ji was too old to make the right judgment. He
wanted to know what was wrong with his platform.
