Lesson 3: Living a Life with Sikh Virtues
According to Sikh Gurus, the universe is created by Waheguru and Waheguru
resides in this creation. Every human being possesses the same divine light as
Waheguru. We are in fact a tiny part of the divine power. Gurbani says about
our existence as:
jYsy jl qy budbudw aupjY ibnsY nIq]
jg rcnw qysY rcI khu nwnk suin mIq] (SGGS 1427)
Just as a bubble on ocean is born and dies, but has same inner qualities as the
water in the ocean, we too are blessed to have the same divine light as the
Waheguru. In this analogy ocean is like Waheguru and we are the bubbles which
come and go. The challenge for us is to realize this basic fact. Guru Amar Das Ji
wrote:

mn hir jI qyrY nwl hY gurmqI rMg mwxu]
It is important for us to inculcate Waheguru like qualities within us. Guru Nanak
Dev Ji wrote the Mool Mantar. It is the first thing we read when we open Sri
Guru Granth Sahib. It is the first thing we read in Japuji Sahib. Mool Mantar
describes nine qualities of Waheguru. Waheguru is the Power that made this
world and that runs this world. That One God is in all human beings, all animals
and all nature.
Every day, every action in our lives should be based on the Mool Mantar. We must
ask ourselves, “Will Guru approve of this action that I am going to do?”

How can Gurbani transform us? A person who understands the first nine words in
the Mool Mantar and who practices them in daily life becomes a believer of one
God, a seeker and practitioner of truth, a doer or creator; is without fear,
