Lesson 4: Ik Oankar <

Today, we will learn about the first word, Ik Oankar. How can Ik Oankar

make us a better person?

ੴ is a symbol created by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, to represent Waheguru.

Sikhs should believe in One Waheguru who created everyone and
everything. We will become caring. Everyone is equal in eyes of Waheguru,

irrespective of gender, color of skin, looks, place of birth or any other

differences. We will treat everyone with respect.

IK Oankar teaches us to be compassionate and help those who need help.

You can create happiness for people by helping them. This will make them

happy and they will make more people happy.

How can you show compassion and respect for others? A simple smile will

make another person smile back at you. When we smile, we feel better

about everything. You can open a door to someone. This will make things
easier for them. They will feel someone cares for them.

Think of someone or something that you do not like. Now think that the
same Waheguru, who created you, has also created them. Sometimes, our

differences may be very small but we may become too upset. Sometimes,

our differences may be very big that we cannot become friends with them

or love them. But we can come to a point where we do not hate them. We

can learn to coexist in peace. That may mean we start changing our feelings
about them. Rather than thinking about what is wrong with them, we can

start thinking about what is good about them. The change in the way of our

thinking will help us become a positive and happy person.

like you? There is no other person just like you. So you must take care of
