Lesson 5: Satnam siqnwmu
Satnam means God is true and God’s name is the truth. How can we, who
are God’s creation, become true? How can “Satnam” make us a better
person?
First of all, we need to be truthful. Being a “true person” goes beyond just
telling truth. We should be dependable and responsible. We should be
truthful even when things may be hard. Guru Nanak Dev Ji called the “true
person” a Sachiara sicAwrw.
There are many times when we may say something that may not be true
and should not be said. We might spread a false rumor. Everyone makes
mistakes, even grownups do. Everyone gets scared by their mistakes. Even
grownups get scared. When you are little, you get more scared. You get
scared that mother or father or grandparents will be angry with you. They
might yell at you. They might give you time out to think about what you did.
What do you do then?
Some of us tell a lie to get out of trouble. When we tell a lie, our heart
gets worried because we do not want anyone to catch us lying, but we know
that we are hiding something and if they find out about it, they will be
angry.
How can we be a Sachiara? We should tell the truth, even if it means we
may get in trouble. This trouble will be for a short time and it will be over
soon. We should say sorry and never make the same mistake again. Your
parents and teachers may be upset for the mistake you made, but they will
be proud of you for telling the truth.
We should be true in keeping our promises. We should do what we say we
will do. We should also know what we can and cannot do. We should not
hide if we do not know something. We can say, “I don’t know it yet, but I
will learn.” That is being truthful. And then try to learn all you can. After
all, you are a Sikh- a learner for life.
