Lesson 2: Sikh Identity

Sikhs have a unique identity. This identity is because they do not cut their

hair. Do you know that Sikhs are not supposed to cut their hair? That’s

right! Boys or girls, men or women- all Sikhs are supposed to keep their hair
              uncut.

Sometimes, boys with jooda are teased in their schools. They are teased

because their friends don’t understand what the jooda is. They don’t

understand why boys can’t cut their hair. You do not need to be afraid of

              telling them.

You can explain it to your friends and teachers the reason for not cutting

your hair is because you are a Sikh. It is a part of your religion. Your jooda
is a part of what you look like. Everyone has different skin color, different

style hair. Your hair is different style. Sikh wear different head covers.

Boys wear Patka, or rumaal or dastar. Girls can wear a dastar or chunni. Men

wear a dastar or a turban. Women can also wear a dastar or turban or

              chunni.

What is a Jooda? A jooda is a bun or knot made of long
hair. Sikhs comb the hair down and then roll them up to

make a jooda or a bun. A jooda keeps the hair tucked up on

                                   top.

What is a Patka or Rumaal? It is important
to keep the hair covered so that it does not

become dirty and it does not open while playing

or working. So the Sikhs tie a small rumaal on

the jooda or a patka on the head.
