3. Two single-edged swords, or Kirpans, are crossed at the bottom and sit
on each side of the Khanda and Chakkar. The left side Kirpan represents
Piri and right side Kirpan represents Miri. Miri means the power of the
world; and Piri means power of the soul. Power of the world gives us
comfortable life. Power of soul gives us peace of mind.
A Khanda is an important symbol for the Sikhs. It reminds us that we need
to be strong- strong in body and strong in mind.
How can you be strong in body?
You can be strong in body by eating the right foods. Eat fruits, vegetables
and healthy foods. Avoid eating too many sweet foods like chocolate, candy
and soda, and fried foods like poori, bhathuray, pakoray and samosay.
To have a healthy and strong body, we must play outside and exercise. Our
muscles need to move to grow.
How can you be strong in mind?
You can be strong in mind by making the right decisions. You need to
understand what the right thing to do is and what is wrong. Sometimes we
make wrong decisions if we are worried or scared. For example, if you did
not do your homework you might feel worried that the teacher will get
angry. You might feel like telling a lie to get out of trouble with the
teacher. But that will be the wrong thing to do. That will not make your
mind strong. The right thing to do will be to tell the truth and promise to
do the homework next time.
These small but correct decisions you make every day will help you become
a strong person when you grow up. Gurbani reading makes us stronger in
mind and spirit. Gurbani teaches us the right ways to live life.
Guru Hargobind Ji wanted all his Sikh to have the powers of the world and
powers of the mind.
