Lesson 4: The Nishan Sahib: The Sikh Flag

When we see a flag, we know it represents a country. Nishan Sahib is a flag

that does not represent a country, but it represents a Gurdwara. It is a sign

of Sikh royalty. It means that in the Gurdwara Sahib only the rules and
traditions given by our Gurus apply.

Every Gurdwara has a flag outside called Nishan Sahib. You can go in and

meet Guru Granth Sahib and listen to Keertan. You can also eat Langar.

The Nishan Sahib is orange or Saffron

colored triangular flag. It has a Khanda

in the center. It is flown on a tall flagstaff

on the grounds of a Gurdwara. The flagstaff

is topped by a steel Khanda. The flagstaff is
also covered by the orange or saffron

              cloth.

Every Visakhi, Sadh Sangat in Gurdwaras

hoist a new Nishan Sahib. It is fun to watch.

Next time on Visakhi, go to Gurdwara early in the morning and watch the
              Nishan Sahib ceremony.
