What is a Dastar or Turban?
A dastar or a turban is a
special head cover that Sikhs
wear on their heads. Most of
the people who wear turbans in
America, are Sikhs. A turban can
be 5 meter long fabric tied nicely in a beautiful design. Most Sikhs tie a
fresh turban on their heads every day.
Long time ago, only kings and rich people could wear a turban. But now all
Sikhs can wear it. Turban or dastar is like a crown for the Sikhs. They treat
it with a lot of respect. No one should touch a Sikh’s turban or dastar or
patka without permission. All these articles are to keep the hair neatly
tucked up. The Patka and the turban or dastar give Sikhs their unique
identity. The Sikhs look handsome.
So when someone asks you or your friend, “What is on your head?” you can
tell them, “It is my long hair. I don’t cut them. I make a bun with them and
tie a patka or a dastar on them. I am a Sikh. Sikhs don’t cut their hair.”
