Orientation Day
The first class serves as orientation for parents and students. During the first
session, set the tone of the class as you would like it to be for the remainder of
the year:
A. Address proper Gurdwara attire using the Little Sikh coloring sheets as a
guide.
• Discuss proper Gurdwara attire.
• Practice Punjabi etiquette words - han ji, nahi ji, mehrbani ji
• Discuss Gurdwara etiquette
◦ Proper matha tekna technique
◦ Keeping head covered at all times while on Gurdwara premises
◦ How to stand while doing Ardas
◦ How to take parshad
B. Discuss and follow the class sequence described in the introduction letter's
Class Format section. Since it is the first class, repeating the intro songs
several times is recommended.
• Learn the Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh song.
• Learn the Sat Sri Akal song.
C. Discuss work ethic and emphasize to parents that students are to be
encouraged to do all the classwork and homework themselves.
D. Discuss parents' role in the classroom.
E. Prepare name tags and hand out books and binders (for storing coloring
sheets and crafts.)
F. Mera Na coloring sheet for homework.
• Students will write their name in Punjabi in the box labeled ‘Mera Na’
• Ask students to attach a favorite picture of themselves to the upper most
box.
G. Field trip to main Gurdwara Hall to do Ardas and practice etiquette.
