What to expect upon completing the Baalvardi program:
Gurmukhi Alphabet
- Visual recognition and recitation of the first 4 lines of the Painty Akhri;
- Recognition of 3-4 vocabulary words that begin with each akhar;
- Recitation of poems and songs in Punjabi that incorporate vocabulary learned;
- Encourage speaking in Punjabi; and
- Encourage Punjabi dialogue by sharing stories in Punjabi.
Numbers and Counting:
- Recitation of 1-10 in Punjabi; and
- Recitation of counting songs in Punjabi as aids to reinforce concepts.
Colors:
- Recognition of 8 colors in Punjabi; and
- Recitation of poems that incorporate names of colors to aid in learning.
Punjabi Greetings and Etiquette Words
- Acknowledge friends, parents, teachers with Sat Sri Akal or Fateh. This concept
is reinforced each week by beginning and ending each class with Fateh; and
- Knowledge of etiquette words in Punjabi and an understanding of when to use
them such as “han ji”, “nahi ji”, and “mehrbani ji”.
Gurmat:
- Names of 1st-10th and present Guru Ji;
- Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji - Ek Onkar, 3 Golden Rules;
- Teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji - Khalsa, 5 Kakars, Singh and Kaur;
- Mool Mantar;
- Gurdwara etiquette and vocabulary that relates to it;
- Knowledge of Sikh symbols - Khanda and Nishan Sahib; and
- Recitation of shabads and poems/songs: The Gurus Song, Ik Chota Bacha, Chalo Singho,
and Raakhaa Eaek Hamaaraa Suaamee.
