INTRODUCTORY CIRCLE TIME
PART 1:
As students enter the classroom, put their name tags on and find a seat for circle time.
Start with a greeting to let the students know class is beginning.
Have the students raise their hands in the air, fold the hands together, bring the clasped hands
down to their chest and count to 3 in Punjabi, together, greet each the class with Waheguru Ji
Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
Recite the following songs with hands folded together:
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Song
(Sung to the tune of Where is Thumpkin)
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa - Teacher recites, students repeat after
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh - Teacher recites, students repeat after
Repeat 2x
Sat Sri Akal Song
(Sung to the tune of Where is Thumpkin)
Sat Sri Akal Sariyan Nu - teacher recites, students repeat after
Jee Ayan Nu - teacher recites, students repeat after
Sat Sri Akal (Name of Student), Jee Ayan Nu, Jee Ayan Nu
Eg: Sat Sri Akal Sidak, Jee Ayan Nu, Jee Ayan Nu
Repeat for each child
Have the children sing to you as well.
Sat Nam Ji Song
I am happy (children frame their face with hands)
I am good (children gives thumbs up)
Sat nam, sat nam, sat nam ji (as kids recite each “Sat nam”, they raise their hands higher,
finally clasping them together with the last “Sat nam”).
Waheguru, Waheguru, Waheguru Ji (children sway side to side with hands clasped in front of
their chest)
PART 2: Review of Akhars and Introduction of New Akhars
Limit the review of akhars to the line that is being taught as the children are young and will
have plenty of opportunity to learn the Painty as they progress in Khalsa School.
Use flash cards for akhars being reviewed. As you hold each one up for the class to see, ask
them to name the akhar, ask what sound does it make and ask which words begin with the
akhar. This is a wonderful opportunity to review the vocabulary the students have learned.
