The JMfw craft is particularly enjoyable for kids as it involves creating the Sikh flag,
known as the Nishan Sahib. Since the Nishan Sahib is typically located on most
Gurdwara Sahib grounds, this craft provides an exciting opportunity for a field
trip, allowing the children to experience darshan in person.
A. Begin by introducing flags that hold significance for the children, helping them
become familiar with the associated vocabulary:
• USA: Represents the country they live in.
• California: Represents their state.
• Nishan Sahib: Represents Sikhism.
B. Engage the children by asking if they know the location of the Nishan Sahib
at the Gurdwara Sahib. Discuss its various components, reviewing its color
and shape. Explain that the Nishan Sahib is a symbol of the Khalsa, where
'nishan' means symbol. It features a khanda in the center, is triangular in
shape on either side, and is saffron in color. It is prominently displayed
outside every Gurdwara, signifying the presence of the Khalsa.
C. After completing the craft, take the children on a field trip to the Nishan Sahib.
Sing the Nishan Sahib song with hand actions, creating a truly magical
experience for everyone involved.
